Bread / Ken Boothe / Boy George

David Gates, bandmember of Bread, wrote this song in 1972 for his then just diseased father.

Soon the song got a Reggae make-over, executed by Ken Booth in 1974. This version was more succesful than Bread’s original.

Thirteen years later Boy George recorded the song. Culture Club, the band he became worldwide famouse, then just split up and in 1987 he aimes for a solo career. George’s version is closer to Ken Boothe’s cover then Bread’s original. It becomes his only number 1 hit in the Uk as a solo artist.

 

Trademark of a true classic

The song has been covered by many artists. Olivia Newton-John in 1972, *NSYNC in 1998 and by Rod Stewart in 2006 all made a version of the song. In many styles the song stays upright.
